Digital Construction Laboratory

Innovative technologies for teaching, research and professional practice in the construction industry

The Digital Construction Laboratory serves as the central interface between digital technologies and construction-related applications. Our focus is on providing sound, practical training in modern methods relating to Building Information Modelling (BIM) and related digital technologies.

Teaching & Support

In practical laboratory exercises and seminars, students apply their theoretical knowledge directly to professional hardware and software. Whether as part of regular courses, project-based coursework or Bachelor’s and Master’s dissertations, we provide close support and guidance for all student work, with a strong focus on practical application.

Research & Development

Beyond teaching, the laboratory serves as a development platform for research and industrial projects. By combining robotics, 3D scanning, additive manufacturing and virtual reality, we are working with partners from the worlds of science and the construction industry to explore solutions for the building sites and planning processes of the future.

Features and technologies

Our laboratory is equipped with a modern, specialised infrastructure for digital workflows and planning processes:

  • High-performance BIM workstations: Powerful computer workstations for demanding BIM modelling, simulation and computer-aided analysis.
  • Collaboration & visualisation:
    • Interactive digital whiteboard for agile teamwork and teaching.
    • Large-format multi-touch table for interactive model presentation, plan review and collaborative project coordination.
  • Virtual & Mixed Reality (VR/XR):
    • HTC Vive Pro 2: High-resolution immersion for virtual walkthroughs and detailed inspections.
    • Meta Quest 3: Flexible, wireless VR and mixed reality applications for teaching and presentations.
  • Autonomous robotics:
    • Unitree Go2 Education: Mobile four-legged robot (quadruped) for research and demonstration of autonomous exploration and inspection tasks.
  • Reality Capture & 3D Scanning:
    • Leica BLK360: Compact 3D laser scanner for precise as-built data capture, point cloud generation and scan-to-BIM workflows.
  • Additive Manufacturing:
    • Bambu Lab X1-Carbon: High-precision 3D printer for rapid prototyping, component models and physical visualisations.
  • Software:
    • Autodesk Revit
    • Autodesk AutoCAD
    • Solibri
    • iTWO
    • Software licences:

If required, a software licence from Autodesk or Solibri can be requested via the functional email address digilab.fbbu@h-da.de. Please let us know the intended purpose and the desired period of use.
